View_Data 3D visualization not working properly

asked 2016-06-01 12:32:38 -0500

updated 2017-08-05 13:31:33 -0500

The view_data report measure for visualizing simulation results apparently does not work properly. I have observed the following limitations:

(1) The View Data Report only shows a visualization if opened by InternetExplorer, but not if opened by Firefox web-browser.

(2) The image resolution in InternetExplorer is very low, of poorer quality than in the OpenStudio Tutorial Video on View_Data measure.

(3) The visualization only works if I am connected to the internet.

(4) InternetExplorer does not display any menu for selecting variables and colormaps etc. for visualization, as shown in Tutorial Video.

WHAT CAN I DO in order to get rid of these limitations ? Are the problems due to web-browser settings which need to be changed ?

My system environment is: Windows7/32bit, OS 1.11.0/EP 8.5.0

Make sure you have the latest version... open the BCL, find it again, and download it again if update needed

The view_data component was downloaded June 1st, 2016, i.e. it must be up-to-date. The good news is: for the same OpenStudio model visualization works perfectly under LINUX, even faster if report.html file is simply opened by Firefox (and not in OpenStudio), but strangely it does not under Windows: here the View Data Report window in OpenStudio remains blank.

Can you try opening it in chrome? We will be upgrading OpenStudio to a new version of Qt that has a newer version of WebKit, hopefully this will allow the report to render in the app.

I added a bug for not rendering offline here

UPDATE

Thanks for the email with browser messages. It looks like your graphics card may not support the needed WebGL features. Can you try going to http://get.webgl.org/ or http://webglreport.com/ and see if they give you any more detailed information?

Is this really a bug or a feature request? I thought it was just loading the required dependencies from aws to avoid having to deal with these in the OS installer itself. Was that incorrect?

Testing Google Chrome in Windows, I observed only a blank View Data report window. However, I cannot guarantee that my browser settings might be too restrictive. At the same time, InternetExplorer displays a low resolution 3D image, which can be rotated, zoomed etc. but without the user menu at the right hand side.

If you are able to, please open the browser's javascript console and load the page. This should show you any errors. Also, make sure you have the most recent version of the measure.

Macumber, I have sent a report on detailed console error messages from Firefox, InternetExplorer, and Chrome to ask@unmethours by email. I hope it will help you diagnosing.

I don't have access to that email, can you send it to openstudio@nrel.gov instead?
