I'm trying to import a working energyplus .idf file into OpenStudio and working through one error message after another and am wondering if it is worth it without Sketchup.

You don't specify if you're talking about the Legacy PlugIn or the full OpenStudio release. If the latter, take a look at this thread. Only the Legacy PlugIn has the ability to completely read and write IDF, and it is only updated when major version changes in EnergyPlus or SketchUp occur. The OpenStudio project has long since moved on from importing IDF, and the SDK is focused on helping developers efficiently author EnergyPlus (and Radiance) input files for single or portfolio-scale analysis. Certainly for portfolio-scale analysis there's no need for SketchUp.

I have OpenStudio 1.11.0, on linux. SketchUp is not available for linux. I think you're saying that if I can get my idf imported, it will be useful without SketchUp?

Click the link in my answer above and take a look at some of the alternative geometry editing methods it discusses. There are a number of workflows that do not require SketchUp to create geometry.

Thanks, I did look at that. Note that one of the methods mentioned in that thread is IDF import, which is what I'm trying to do but it doesn't work very well. I actually have a geometry defined in my IDF which was generated by BEopt. I think the answer to my question is that SketchUp is only used for the geometry?

SketchUp is primarily used for geometry definition along with space, zone, and construction assignments. You can edit the latter assignments in the OS Application without SketchUp. You can also visualize your model in the App with the view model measure to check that it's what you think it is. The BEOpt guys might have some recommended workflows for importing models into OS.
