I am searching for an advice or idea on how to model the shading devices on my model (office bulding). I would like to apply exterior blinds on my window. The problem is that in open studio the options for the control type are on/of/on if schedule allows/on if high solar on window. I would like a more optimised way of shading control to save cooling energy in summer and to maximise solar heat gain in winter, but at the same time keep the model as simple as possible.

In energy plus there are more options for the control types for shades, and i could go with the "on if high outdoor air temp and high solar on window".

What does it mean, when i model my object in Sketchup+OS and then edit the idf in EP launch (e.g. change the control type for shades)? Does this mean that i could view the results only from EP-launch, and that the changes in the idf would not reflect in the results from OS (and therby exclude any further analysis on my model using PAT).

I am new in EP and OS and just getting a good idea on how the two programs work and correlate with each other.

When a simulation is run through OpenStudio, the OS model creates an EnergyPlus IDF, runs the E+ simulation, and imports the results back into OS. OS has the ability to export the IDF which you can edit and run through EP Launch, however certain changes made to the IDF will not be reflected if you tried to import back into OS. If you use the 'import IDF' function of OS, only certain elements are brought back into OS (internal loads, schedules, materials, constructions, surfaces, and zones). Changing the Shading Control Type and setpoint in EP-Lanuch/IDF-editor would likely not be translated back to OS.

If you want to use the E+ shading controls that aren't currently supported by OS, but run the simulation and view results in OS, you would need to create an EnergyPlus Measure in OpenStudio. These measures manipulate the IDF created by OS before the simulation is run by E+. The final results are then pulled back into OS.

If creating an EnergyPlus measure is too daunting, you may decide to have a 1 way workflow where you make changes in the OS model, export the IDF and manually change the shading control, and then view the final results from an E+ output report. Another solution could be to run the more detailed solar control in E+ and determine the annual schedule for when the shades are deployed. You could then re-create a custom, hourly schedule in OS that mimics the operation and apply it to your OS model using the 'on if schedule allows' control.

Thanks for your spot on answer. I needed some clear information about this, so that i am certain about how EP and OS correlate with each other, and i do not lose unnecessary time. I will look in to the OS crating measures chapter, and if it looks handable for me, then i will try this way.

Tnx again for your advice and answer.
