I am getting recurring error when i am addings widows to my building in sketchup. The error appears to be in openstudio plugin. I have made the model couple of times from scratch but this errors seems to happen each time when i start adding windows. After the error the open studio toolbar disappears and building shows up as wireframe structure. After this it is impossible to add anything to model. Please suggest how avoid this error.

Plus I have observed that many times while using project loose geometry command the windows are not created I have to do it 2-3 times to create window. Why is this happening?

Best, Sanket

  1. Can you describe how you are drawing the windows.
  2. Do you get any kind of error dialog, or is the first indication of problems the toolbar/wireframe
  3. What happens if you save as another name run through the diagnostic script , and re-open.

I am trying to create windows on a 5 storey building. I am not using the WWR tool but manually inserting windows by creating rectangle of same dimension and then using "project loose geometry" tool. however over some surfaces I am facing problems that the windows are not being created. Apart from this I have certain observations as follows:

1) Over some surface I have to mention Length first followed by height, for eg 4,5 where 4 is length and5 is height, and on some surfaces it should be vice versa.

2) I am creating a rectangle of dimension of window and then pasting it on all the surfaces which have similar window size. when i project these loose geometry then not all windows are created. I observed that all the surfaces where the length, breath format of mentioning dimension gets reversed the windows are not project. Why is this happening??

3) As it is quite big building, after adding certain number of windows an error occurs after which the OS plugin disappears and building appears in wireframe. after this now windows can be added and no editing of model is effective any more. I am attaching the error as pictures. !st pic shows the error other shows the building how it looks after error.

4) While creating windows using WWR method such errors were never seen, is it some problem while creating individual windows? and how to go about it as having uniform window length using WWR method would not give right representation of building, as different rooms have different windows sizes & over hangs depending upon their orientation.

  1. After you click to define one corner and drag your mouse, you should see the current dimensions at the bottom right of the SketchUpwindows. If Yale your rectangle long and skinny you can confirm which dimension it want you to type first. I think it is short then long side of triangle. Here is a link to SketchUp tool guide.. Under the drawing tools and rectangle you can learn more about how it works.
  2. One possible reason that a surface may not show up is if what you drew at the top level was not exactly planar with the space surface. This can happen if your space is slightly out of square with your coordinate system. I have seen this when the base model is made off of imported cad files. Also the project loose geometry in SketchUp's native intersect API, which has some bugs. If a surface doesn't copu over try to copy the edges, then double click to enter the space you want the window on and choose paste in place (it is in SketchUp's edit window.
  3. If the building is very large, instead of projecting all of the windows at once, start with a specifc story or facade first and save between each operation. If you hit an erro, save as another OSM or quit without saving, but don't save over what you expect is a clean OSM.
  4. When you use WWR user script the window as just short o the length of the surface. The ratio is achieved by adjusting the height. If you have a different target ratio on differnt sides you can apply the WWR and overhang scripts based on your current selection. Using this with surface search you can apply unique WWR ratios and overhang projection factors to each facade. If you have vertical fins, you would need to manually add those.

Hi David,

It the model is behaving weirdly. Now after creating windows, saving the file and opening it again, the walls where the windows are suddenly not at their place and have been projected somewhere outside the building! I did not encounter such problems earlier when I was working on OS 1.4 (now I have recent one, 1.5) and in sketchup 2013 (now using 2014 version). I have 64 bit windows. 64 bit version of sketchup 2014 is not available, hence I have installed 32 bit skechup on 64 bit windows. Can it be this compatibility issue?
