I am switching from a Windows 7 machine to a Windows 8.1 laptop and having issues with OpenStudio crashing. It crashes every time OpenStudio tries to access the Windows Explorer file structure, so any time I try to open or save a project, it crashes. This happens in the OpenStudio application as well as the Sketchup plugin. We have tried OpenStudio 1.90 and 1.10.0. The problem signature is posted below. Thanks in advance for your help. - Tim

Eric, thanks for the links. We tried both without any luck. The other wrinkle is we are using Classic Shell skin to mimic a Windows 7 menu on Windows 8.1 (http://www.classicshell.net/). The issue is definitely the OpenStudio interaction with Windows Explorer. If we figure it out, I will post the solution.

I still haven't found a solution. We tried running OpenStudio in Windows 8.1 without the classic shell, but had the same problem.

Thanks to Dan Macumber at NREL for troubleshooting. The issue was with Dell Backup and Recovery. We removed the program and OpenStudio works again. Here is a forum post from Dan describing a similar issue: http://en.community.dell.com/support-...

I spent the past couple of days wondering what I was doing wrong. My Dell laptop has Windows 10 and OpenStudio 1.5.0 was working fine but I was unable to work with v2.1 or v2.2. I was reading through the installation notes till now and stumbled upon this question only yesterday. I uninstalled Dell backup and recovery. OpenStudio v2.2 works fine now. THANKS A LOT!

It is probably a good idea to highlight this issue in the installation notes.

Hey Tim - I've used OS v1.9.0 and v1.10.0 on Window 8.1 just fine, so I don't think the problem is with OpenStudio. This Microsoft answers thread seems to indicate the fault module is related to NVIDIA drivers, though it's specific to Windows 7. Here is another one concerning Windows 8.1, which indicates it might be a AMD driver issue...

The OS developers (@macumber, @Kyle Benne) might be able to shed some more light, but I get the sense the problem is out of their control. Sorry this isn't a great answer...good luck.
