Adding makeup cold water at water heater instead of at WaterUse:Connections

In multifamily buildings with central DHW loops, it is common for makeup cold water (replacing hot water going down the drain) to be mixed into the loop at the water heater. This is shown by the yellow CWS in the diagram in Figure 1.

However, in EnergyPlus it appears that the WaterUse:Connections object automatically mixes in cold makeup water to the outlet node of the branch with the WaterUse:Connections object on it (see Figure 2; source)

How can I mix in the makeup cold water at the water heater (after the return pipes) instead?

The solution I’ve come up with is to put my return pipes on the bypass branch of the demand side of the loop (before the mixer), instead of after the mixer. Seems to be working well; the flow through my return pipes no longer includes the makeup cold water.
