Performance Based Curves integration into Design Builder
Hi All, I have a few queries on integration of performance based curves into design builder. Would appreciate your help in the following queries.
We work extensively with both water-cooled and air-cooled chillers. What are the best sources for manufacturer-specific performance curves (EIR vs temperature, capacity vs temperature, etc.)? When detailed curves are unavailable, how do you reliably model part-load efficiency—especially for inverter-driven chillers? Also, what steps or tips help ensure curve compatibility in Design Builder to reflect actual performance? Any excel based tool to get the coefficients easily?
For VRF systems, how do you extract performance curves from manufacturer technical data books—especially when only outdoor unit tables are available? Is it acceptable to use outdoor unit curves for indoor units if those aren’t specified? Also, how do you model part-load behavior and piping losses effectively in Design Builder when data is incomplete?
What’s the most efficient workflow to create and verify custom HVAC performance curves in DesignBuilder? Are there any tools (Excel, Python) to automate curve fitting from manufacturer tables into EnergyPlus-compatible formats? How do you validate curve realism post-integration, especially for multi-speed fans or variable-capacity systems?
