Validation of fullinteriorandexterior for a sawtooth facade

Hi,

I'm working with a sawtooth facade that is glazed on two faces. I have the simulation running with fullinteriorandexterior turned on. I want to validate these results to see the amount of solar radiation entering the space through one window and leaving through the other.

For this validation, I'm unsure about which eneryplus output to look at. I've been looking at Surface Window Heat Gain rates for both the windows along with Zone window Heat Gain! rate but have been unsure how to correctly check the output.

Not a definitive answer - depends on what you're after, specifically.

With output variables, it generally boils down to:

  • carefully reading relevant sections of both IO and Engineering reference manuals
  • going through past UMH posts, e.g. here
  • iterative experimentation

I'd first work off of a copy of your model, and experiment. Start simple with just a few variables, then work your way up to larger, more detailed sets.

Pay careful attention to definitions when considering output variables, and make sure requested variables are available in the .rdd file. Great first set of suggestions from @shorowit. I'd start with zone-level variables, such as Zone Windows Total Heat Gain Rate and Zone Windows Total Heat Loss Rate. You pretty much have to track them as a pair, given that either report summed values only when positive or negative.

For both subsurfaces in your schematic cross-section, I'd start with Surface Window Net Heat Transfer Rate. Without frame/dividers, interior shading or airflow control, this boils down to:

You can track these individually. As suggested by @Aaron Boranian, and under Window Output Variables, this requires you activate DisplayAdvancedReportVariables under Output:Diagnostics.
