I am working on daylighting control in EnergyPlus and have a problem. I defined two different daylighting controllers, with different illuminance setpoints. 500 lux and 10 lux. I expect to see two different curves since the setpoints have huge differences, however, they almost overlap with each other.

1) The lighting power is zero during daytime, it makes sense because I checked "Daylighting Reference Point 1 Illuminance", which is always above the setpoint during daytime, so we don't need artificial lights to maintain the target illuminance.

2)The lighting power shows a slight difference at around 5:00 AM and 7:00 PM, which also makes sense to me. Because during this period, the illuminance level is lower than 500lux but higher than 10 lux, so the light is working in different powers.

3)However, during the night, both controllers work at full capacity, which confused me a lot. I know there is no natural light during the night so we rely on artificial lighting, but I have different setpoints!!! And I tested control mode "continues, continues-off and stepped", the light should work in different power right? But when I check "Daylighting Lighting Power Multiplier", they are always 1 during the night. Anyone can help me with this? Thank you!

More information:

1) I checked the sensor, it is in the middle of the zone

2) I tried different availability schedules for daylighting controllers. Include "always on", or the same schedule schedule as the lighting schedule.

3) The lighting schedule is default, (DOE prototype single family house), I also tried to change to "always on".

You are asking the program to dim the artificial lighting based on setpoint, however that control setpoint is only used in daylight harvesting. Thus, at night, your lighting power will be calculated based on your design lighting wattage and your schedule.

Thank you for your answer! So the daylighting control can only be enabled during the daytime, do I understand correctly? BTW, is there any way we can control the lighting power based on illuminance setpoint during the night as well? Thank you!!

you're welcome. I'm a design builder user and I design my lighting power using the units, 2- Normalized power density [W/(ft2-fc)]. I use 0.025 for LED and set the target footcandle level in the zone activity data tab. This way, if a space is 1000 ft2 with a target footcandle of 30, then the design wattage is 750 watts for the zone.
