If this is a topic you are interested in, you might want to read this blog post I wrote called What Engineers Need to Know About Version Control.
Version control is an excellent example of something that engineers really should be intimately familiar with. The usual reaction is "Oh, I don't need that" or "That's too complicated". But in reality, all engineers do ad hoc version control and it is just as complicated and far less useful. At least, those are my opinions.
