Running EnergyPlus v8.4 on Debian 8

I am trying to run EnergyPlus on Debian 8. I using the "runenergyplus" script and get the following error when the script tries to execute either energyplus or ReadVarsESO: "cannot execute binary file: Exec format error". Is there anything I can do to avoid this error?

Are you using a 32 bit Debian?

@Jeremy, were you able to resolve your problem by using a different operating system? If you must use 32 bit Debian, you can create a custom build of EnergyPlus on your machine. Following the instructions for building on Linux.

Thanks @Neal Kruis for getting back to me! I usually use EnergyPlus on Windows. I wanted to try it out on a Linux machine. I'll try to create a custom build of EnergyPlus by following the instructions you provided.
